Solo Exhibition “Stained Slabs” at the Dougherty Arts Center through July 14
Big Thank You to everyone who came out for the soft opening and/or the official reception of “Stained Slabs,” my first solo exhibition of this scale. The Lowrider Showcase in conjunction with Austin Lowriding last week at the Dougherty Arts Center was amazing, and it was inspiring to see all the old school Lowriders come out and mix and mingle with the art center crowd. I hope we set a precedent bridging various cultural, spatial and socioeconomic gaps in Austin and that there will be more events like this to come.
Thanks to the Austin Chronicle for attending and for an honest review in the print edition this month. Read it here.
Customizing lowriders is an art form all its own. And unless I spent decades like J. Colunga owning a Body & Paint shop, customizing and detailing cars, all aspects from what is under the hood, to the paint jobs, plush interior, and everything in between, I would not be able to represent them to the fullest.
But I did take this opportunity in a high-profile gallery setting to experiment with some new media, such as mosaic, neon, and installation art, and am excited to integrate these techniques and aesthetics into more public art projects and commissions in the near future.
If you haven’t gotten a chance to go see the show yet, it is up through July 14th. Please get out and patronage the gallery, get connected and in-the-know with the Dougherty Arts Center for all the awesome art programs they offer, and let me know what you think. I would love if you could make a post about it as well in your social media networks in order to encourage a wider audience for my work.
Thank you to all the partners, sponsors and collaborators involved in making this show happen. A few listed here are: Texas Sake Company, Dulce Vida Tequila, Strangeland Brewery, Kreyol Korner, Noble Sandwich Co., Latin Freestyle Records, MakeATX, Mindzai Creative, HOPE Campaign, SprATX, Austin Lowriding, J. Colunga Body & Paint, Willard Woodworks, Ion Art, Austin School of Mosaic Art, Aprhrodite’s Oysters, Bento Picnic, Art Pro Wine, Low Life Originals, and to John Mireles for loaning his awesome 1965 Schwinn Stingray lowrider bike. Thank you to the DJs, Diggy Dutch, Phauxkis, MEZDATA, Zach Zulch, and anyone else who helped lift a large piece of artwork, promote the show, pass out flyers, check the level, etc. I appreciate your input and value your time and energy.
Thank you to Anne Davieaux and the Dougherty Arts Center for having me and all your support in making it happen.
Here are some more photos by Kendra Gorleski to recap if you haven’t made it out yet. Don’t forget it’s up through July 14th!
