Glass tile mosaic

Roanoke Public Library, Roanoke, TX

This vibrant mosaic at Roanoke Public Library celebrates the town as a crossroads of culture, history, and lifelong learning. At the center, a young visitor raises her hands in the shape of a heart, surrounded by youth of all ages who reflect the diverse generations drawn to the library. Behind them, a richly patterned tapestry blends global and local textile traditions, including Filipino basahan, ikat fabric, a colorful Mexican serape, and a quilt inspired by one located at the library. Native Texas flora, including red yucca, prickly pear cactus, bluebonnets, Indian blanket flowers, and radiant sunflowers, bloom across the scene, grounded by Roanoke’s iconic autumn leaves.

Anchoring the composition, the word “Roanoke” appears in historic railroad-style lettering, honoring the town’s founding in 1881 when the Texas and Pacific Railroad first laid tracks through the area. Together, these elements create a mosaic tribute to Roanoke’s enduring legacy and its vibrant, interconnected future.

Community members helped create the mural during fun workdays at the Roanoke Fire Department and Roanoke Public Library. This nearly 200-square-foot mural was created in just a few days thanks to the community coming together and creating art.
