Ceramic, porcelain, stone, and glass mosaic; Spray paint on wall
Pour09, Beaumont, TX
Upon entering Pour09, patrons are greeted by vibrant painted foliage and subdued wood signage outside the venue flanking the bar sign and welcoming them into the main courtyard, hinting at the explosion of colors within.
A graphic and striking black and white mosaic mural marks the entrance, and people can continue on into the courtyard or stay in the intimate indoor speakeasy style bar downstairs. The black and white stripe is a running design motif throughout and provides an energetic directional element in high contrasts and a great backdrop for photos.
Utilizing ceramic, porcelain, glass stone, and tile from all over the world, this new Southeast, Texas landmark is a one-of-a-kind artwork conceived by myself and designer Linsey McNeel for the enjoyment of patrons of the Pour09 courtyard.
Not only was the fabrication of this quilt-like mural a community effort, with the diverse staff, owners, and friends of the Pour09 team helping to place each of the tens of thousands of pieces, spelling out iconic Southeast, TX, but the material itself comes from all over the world, most of which has been recycled and repurposed for this mosaic artwork.
Upstairs pays homage to one of Port Arthur’s most well-known and loved artists in music history: Janis Joplin. In a colorful geometric overlay pattern, I painted Joplin’s portrait using all spray paint and achieved an illusory effect, her timeless presence presiding over the entire upstairs bar with her archetypal hope, grit, and optimism.
There is also a reference to the region’s “boomtown” history and modern day oil and gas industries with the spindletop and teeter totter in silhouette across a prismatic deconstructed sunset, fading into an intricate glass mural overlooking the parking lot.
