A decorative ceramic tile with a blue and white portrait of a man dressed in historical formal attire, with the name Jeremiah J. Hamilton written at the bottom.

Jeremiah J. Hamilton

Jeremiah Hamilton, a Black political and civic leader, lived in Bastrop County and became a spokesman for Black workers as early as 1866. He ran successfully in 1869 for the Texas House of Representatives in the Twelfth Legislature to advance law enforcement, education, and civil rights. After his legislative term Hamilton remained in Austin, where he worked primarily as a carpenter. His greatest achievement as a craftsman came with the construction of an unusual triangular house, which still stands in Symphony Square.

Eastern Bluebirds perch upon branches and flit about on the frieze of 1121 Symphony Square. These mosaic bird panels are made with thousands of tiny glass tiles that act much like pixels in an image. Painted line drawings of local flora and fauna are overlaid on abstract squiggles and scribbles.
