ATX Urban Art
After working on it for the past year, I’m so excited to share my newest and perhaps most ambitious project to date! Culminating from decades of artistic evolution on the streets of Austin, Texas, ATX Urban Art is a first-of-its-kind book showcasing the best of the city’s graffiti, street art, murals, and mosaics from the 1950s to today. This 500-page book shines a spotlight on over 100 Austin-based artists at a time when the rapid growth of our city makes the preservation of the early pioneers and those carrying the torch today so important.
Austin residents and visitors alike can gain a deeper understanding of the city as well as the visual artists and vandals behind the ever-evolving tapestry of urban art in our streets. The book’s four chapters: Graffiti, Street Art, Murals, and Mosaics, will each include an introduction to the artform, some historical notes, insights into the various styles, explanations of the vernacular, and most importantly, dozens and dozens of spreads for our featured artists.
Our Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign runs from Friday, November 26 to Friday, January 7th where you can contribute to receive tons of awesome perks and, of course, the first run of the BOOK itself! We collaborated with as many artists as we could in this process — for example, our shirt is designed by featured muralist FISH and screen printed by hand by another undisclosed artist at their shop in Austin, and we also have packs with slaps and stickers from a variety of featured artists.
I’m most excited about all the exclusive commissions, prints, and original art available only through our Indiegogo campaign, including work by SLOKE ONE, Niz, Federico Archuleta, LACED, Kimie Flores, SLEEP IS FAMOUS, B~Kay, Ed Booth, Jason Eatherly, Goodluck Buddha, and Eye Dr. The best part is that when you snag any of those perks, half of the proceeds will go directly to the artist to support their work.
We’ll be dropping these perks over the course of the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for them on our Instagram and take advantage of these awesome deals!
It’s strange to think that we were just starting to talk about ATX Urban Art a little under a year ago and we’ve come so far since then. Working with my badass team of dedicated photographers and designers: Justin Ebel, Zoe Axelrod, and Tony Moreno, alongside dozens of valuable contributions from featured artists, photographers, and documentarians has all been instrumental to making this book a reality.
A great deal of care has gone into creating this book and doing right by our community. ATX Urban Art promises to be the most definitive urban art book of our city for years to come, and I can’t wait to pass those precious first copies from my hands to yours.
